They’re small, cute and they smell funny. They’re little bundles from heaven that will grow up and cut you off in traffic.

But when they’re babies, they’re really something.

Here are some fun facts about babies for you current and/or expectant parents.

  • Every three seconds a new baby comes into the world. Four million babies are born in the US each year.
  • The normal baby will be about four months old before it can taste salt due to the kidneys not being fully formed.
  • There is a protein that keeps a baby’s skull from fusing. It’s called “noggin.” Sound familiar?
  • A newborn baby is more apt to turn its head to the right than to the left.
  • Babies are born with way more taste buds than adults. About 10,000 to be exact. They are located on the tongue, sides, and roof of the mouth. Over time they disappear.
  • Babies are born with 300 bones. Full-grown adults have 206. Baby’s bones will fuse together as they mature until they reach the 206 level.
